Milwaukee German Immersion School is a 4-year old kindergarten through grade 5 elementary school founded by Milwaukee Public Schools in 1977. We serve as a magnet school to attract children from all parts of Milwaukee with our innovative total language immersion program.
Organization: MGIS presently has three full-day 4-year old kindergartens, four all day 5-year old kindergartens, four first grades, four second grades, three third grades, three fourth grades, two fifth grades, and four exceptional education classes. There are no tuition or transportation fees.
Curriculum: MGIS provides children with the academic, social, and economic benefits of becoming bilingual in German and English. All children (except in the exceptional education program) receive reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies and science instruction in German from the first day of school through the fifth grade. In second grade, students are introduced to 30 minutes per day of English reading instruction. The amount of English is increased to approximately one and one-half hours per day at the fourth and fifth grade levels. Extra-curricular activities during the school day include: violin, piano or band lessons, folk dance group, Fitness Club, Handchime Choir, and softball leagues. After school recreation activities are sponsored by the PTA.
Student Body: We have over 600 students at K4 - Grade 5, 30 of whom are in Exceptional Education programs. We maintain a racially balanced school, with approximately 40% African-American students. We are a city-wide program with students coming from all parts of the city. 10% of our students are from the suburbs.
Faculty: There are 21 German Immersion classroom teachers, 4 Exceptional Education teachers, full-time specialists in Reading, Music, Art, and Physical Education, and a Program Implementer. Our Immersion teachers, assistants and Program Implementer are totally bilingual. More than 70% of our Immersion staff are native speakers of German. Six teachers have received recent awards for outstanding teaching.
Facility: We are located adjacent to a park in a residential area on the northwest side of Milwaukee. Our building was constructed in 1958, and underwent a $2 million expansion. We have 22 classrooms, an art room with kiln, gymnasium with stage, private courtyard, lunchroom, kitchen to prepare lunches/breakfast, Library, Teacher Resource Center, Computer Lab, and a Reading Resource Center. We have Internet access throughout our school in every classroom and in the Computer Lab.
Admission Policies: Children are only accepted at the K4, K5, and Grade 1 levels without any prior knowledge of German. There are no special enrollment requirements for entrance into our school at these levels. Applications are taken during a two-week sign-up period in January. If there are more applicants than there are openings, students are randomly selected by computer lottery. Non-selected students are placed on a waiting list for the upcoming year. Admission at Grades 2-5 is dependent upon the student's prior German/English experiences and space availability. Students may continue in the Grade 6-12 German Immersion Program at Milwaukee School of Languages.
